Our Mission: Truth in Gaming

The internet has made everything easier — from hailing a ride to connecting with friends to ordering delivery. The same is true for gaming, which traditionally had been done in person — both legally at casinos and racetracks, and illegally in underground gambling parlors and with shady bookies.

In the 20th century, illegal betting parlors and bookies were largely controlled by organized crime. Gamblers who racked up debts were routinely subjected to violence, intimidation, and financial ruin — all without any recourse. It’s why so many governments decided to take on the mob and create government-regulated betting venues like casinos and lotteries. There, betting and odds would be transparent, customers could be confident they were supporting legitimate businesses, and governments could starve this revenue source for organized crime.

History is repeating itself in the internet age. Unregulated — and therefore illegal in most countries — online poker, sports betting, and casino websites are booming in America and across the world. Instead of the mob, these sites are run by secretive oligarchs in Malta and Romania and serve as havens for money laundering by international crime rings. These websites will take bets from anyone — regardless of a customer’s age, location, or how much debt they’ve already accumulated. They stack the odds against users and often don’t pay out winning bets. But since they’re the only option in places where online gambling is illegal, they still attract heavy traffic — making a killing by ripping off customers who would be far better served by trusted, government-tested and approved online betting platforms.

This rise in dangerous illegal online gambling is why many governments have chosen to legalize and regulate online poker, sports betting, and casino gaming. These efforts have successfully diverted customers away from illegal bookies to safer, pro-consumer legal alternatives.

But as regulated online betting has expanded, anti-gambling campaigners and self-interested casino corporations have teamed up to roll back access and block customers from having the option of regulated online poker, sports betting, and casino gaming. If these fact-free puritans had their way, they would prevent any consumer, anywhere in the world, from accessing regulated betting — funneling hundreds of billions each year to opaque, exploitative gambling websites instead. These groups use bad data, weak research, and spurious logic to make false and exaggerated claims about legal, regulated betting while ignoring the massive harm caused by its illegal alternatives.

At Truth in Gaming, we believe consumers deserve a real choice — and that self-interested anti-gambling absolutists must be called out for peddling misinformation and turning a blind eye to the dangers of unregulated online betting.
